The Burnaby Velodrome

One of only  two indoor velodromes in Canada ( Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario is the other )  and one of four in North America, the Burnaby Velodrome is a unique facility, located just below SFU on Barnet Highway in Burnaby. Inside the Harry Jerome Sports Centre is a 200M long and 6m wide wooden cycling track with 47 degree corners. The Burnaby Velodrome was built by Cycling BC and numerous volunteers between 1991 and 1997. It replaced the China Creek Velodrome, which was built for the 1954 Empire Games and was demolished in 1980 to make way for the construction of the Broadway campus of Vancouver Community College. The Burnaby Velodrome opened its doors in November 1997.

Very popular in Europe and Australia, track racing takes place on tight 200m – 400m wooden or concrete circular tracks. Canada has a proud heritage of world class track cyclists, from Torchy Peden in the 30's and Jim Davies in the 50's right through the 90’s with Olympic medallists and World Champions Kurt Harnett, Tanya Dubnicoff and Brian Walton and most recently Lori Ann Muenzer, with her Gold Medal performance in the Match Sprint at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Building on this proud history, the Burnaby Velodrome is keenly focused on supporting the next generation of Canada’s world class athletes. Our junior training program is open to all levels of riders under the age of 19 and is a joint venture between Cycling BC and the Burnaby Velodrome. Only one year has passed since the inception of this program in the fall of 2006, yet the program is being recognized as one of the best in Canada.
